Image Title: “a family prayer” (Monte Sinai, Ecuador)
“He humbles those in high places, and the lofty city he brings down…It is trampled underfoot by the needy, by the footsteps of the poor.” Isaiah 26:5-6
This year, I have longed so deeply for an end to division and righteous anger. For God’s light to guide a path that allows each and every person to be seen, listened to, valued, and loved. For compassion and mercy to guide our all too quick judgements of each other and of ourselves. I chose this image before I looked at the readings for today because of the mere sacredness of this moment in my life at the beginning of the pandemic in addition to the contemplative power of its seemingly ordinary and imperfect qualities. I was taken aback to reflect upon the first reading from Isaiah next to the image, especially in light of the Advent season. If I desire the light of Christ in these challenging times, in what ways am I being called to shift, grow, change, and listen? How does the small, humble foot stepping so gently on my own remind me to seek humility and embody the Light in this world for which I so desperately yearn? How does my life speak to those on the margins of society, even if I do not get to see their faces every day? And finally, how can I venture into this season of hoping, waiting, and longing in a manner that is united in community with others?
O Come, O Come Emmanuel.
“The Lord is God and he has given us light” (Psalm 118:27)
