Jesus tells us in today’s Scripture that, “Whoever has ears ought to hear” (Mt 11:15); yet how hard it can seem to listen! The clatter of the El. The rush of morning traffic. The person shouting on the sidewalk. Most of us would rather put our headphones in and keep our heads down. Why do we not listen? Perhaps because we are afraid of what we will hear–the cry of protestors across our country against racism and police brutality; the quiet loneliness of someone we may not always like in our community; an overburdened healthcare system. Perhaps we are afraid of what hearing means, and how we should answer the call, weary as we are. Yet, it is only through God that we can do anything–with God there is the abundance that Isaiah references: springs of water on dry ground, and cypresses in the wasteland (Is 41:18-19). Trusting in God’s abundance, we can remove our headphones and truly hear, allowing God to enter into our hearts as He enters into our noisy world in the person of Christ this season.
